Guilty plea from Ohio officer clocked at 149 mph
NEWARK, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio police officer accused of off-duty motorcycling down a highway at nearly 150 mph has pleaded guilty to speeding.
Christopher Thomas, 33, apologized as he entered his plea today in Licking County Municipal Court. The officer from the Columbus suburb of Gahanna called what he did “extremely wrong.”
A judge fined him $150 and suspended his driver’s license for six months.
Authorities said Thomas was clocked June 28 going 149 mph on Interstate 70 east of Columbus, where the speed limit is 65 mph.
Thomas is currently on a medical leave from his department.
An off-duty state trooper who was ticketed with him has pleaded not guilty to speeding. Jason Highsmith is accused of going 147 mph on his motorcycle.
