July weather was anything but typical for the Valley

The average temperature last month was the second lowest for the area for July.

YOUNGSTOWN — Did we skip July?

Sure, there were cookouts, fireworks and kids playing outside last month.

But there were several times, particularly at night, when jackets and long pants were needed — and the temperatures were not like a typical July.

The average temperature for the month was the second lowest for a July for the Mahoning Valley in its recorded weather history, which dates to 1897.

The average temperature last month was 67.4 degrees, 2.5 degrees lower than normal.

The July with the lowest average temperature for the Valley was 2000, with an average temperature of 67 degrees.

There was not a day in July in which the temperature hit 90 degrees.

There were only three days in which the temperature reached at least 85 degrees last month: 86 degrees on July 16 and 28, and 85 degrees on July 15.

There were 20 days in July in which the temperature dropped to at least 50 degrees, including four days in which it got into the 40s.

The coldest day was July 8, when the low temperature was 47 degrees.

The Valley averages about seven to 10 days a year of temperatures reaching at least 90 degrees.

So far this year, there’s been one: June 25, when the temperature was 90 degrees.

And why was it so cool last month?

Apparently, we can blame Canada.

“It is a persistent pattern of cold pressure from Canada that brought [the] weather,” said Mark Adams, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The pressure kept the warm air from the South away from Northeast Ohio, resulting in lower-than- normal temperatures for most of the region, Adams said.

We’re not alone.

More than 1,100 daily record low temperatures were broken last month in the Northeast and Midwest, according to the National Climatic Data Center.

The area will see average highs in the lower 80s through Sunday, with the exception of today. The high today is expected to be in the mid-80s.

Beginning Sunday, the temperature will rise to the mid-80s and into the upper 80s the next day, Adams said.

“The upper 80s might try to hang around for most of next week,” he said.

The average high temperature for this time of the year is 81 degrees.

The weather service’s official weather records for this area are recorded at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.
