Report: Pittsburgh cops need new training

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Pittsburgh City Council report is recommending new training and better equipment in the wake of shooting in which three officers were killed in April.

The improvements include better radios and global positioning devices for officers, along with “silent” gear that cannot be overheard by people with police scanners.

Monday’s report comes nearly four months after Richard Poplawski allegedly killed officers Paul Sciullo II, Stephen Mayhle and Eric Kelly when they responded to a disturbance call April 4. Authorities say Poplawski’s mother told a 911 operator her son had a weapon but that information wasn’t relayed to police.

The report says officers should also get better training to handle shooting incidents before SWAT teams have time to arrive.
