NOTEBOOK From Eastwood Field

Muckdogs cooked: Scrappers starting pitcher Clayton Cook had pitched 12 scoreless innings in two previous starts against Batavia. Saturday, Cook’s shutout streak reached 18 scoreless innings. Cook, who turned 19 on July 23, only gave up a season-best three hits. The righthander left the game with Mahoning Valley holding a 1-0 lead.

Saturday Night Fever: The Scrappers extended their record to 7-1 on Saturday nights. Mahoning Valley improved its home record to an impressive 16-4.

Lead-pipe lock: Entering Saturday night’s game, the Scrappers were 20-0 when holding a lead entering the eighth inning. Mahoning Valley was also 18-5 when they scored first in the game. Those streaks were extended with last night’s win.

Tarp-less: The Scrappers have not had to pull out the tarp during any game this season despite the rainy month of July. Despite the clouds all night Saturday, the tarp remained rolled up and unused.

Quite a hit: Mahoning Valley is leading the New York-Penn League in several offensive categories. The Scrappers are leading in at bats (1,426), runs (187) and hits (351).
