Cora Marie Petrarca Gioglio

Born: Aug. 9, 1909, in New Kensington, Pa.

Parents: Enrechetta and Celestino Petrarca.

Residence: Moved to Youngstown as a young child; now at Assumption Village in North Lima.

Siblings: The seventh of 13 children in the family. Her sisters, Ergia (Jean) Guarnieri lives in Liberty and Margarite Gondol in Canfield, and a brother, Fred Petrarca, lives in Sun City, Ariz. Deceased are Rose Andrews, Clem Popio, Millie DeBlasio, Helen Marinelli, Lucy Young, Julia Latessa, Elizabeth (Tippy) Fayard, Mary Jimenez and Charles Petrarca.

Married: Fred A. Gioglio on Sept. 22, 1934, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. He died in 1985.

Children: Her two children and their spouses are Joanne and John Malys of Boardman, and Fred and Carmel Gioglio of Phoenix, Ariz.

Grandchildren: Her six grandchildren and their spouses are: Barbara and Mike Baker of Hubbard, Lori and Kurt Sineri of Fullerton, Calif., Terrie and Rusty Beasley of Alvin, Texas, Mary C. Malys of Middleburgh Heights, Michelle Gioglio of Hollbrook, Ariz., and Dan and Jessica Gioglio of Cave Creek, Ariz.

Great-grandchildren: Lauren, Hollie and Melissa Baker of Hubbard; James Beasley III of Alvin; and Jack Gioglio of Cave Creek.

Schooling: Graduated from East High School in 1928.

Employment: Was a linotype operator for her father’s Italian language newspaper prior to her marriage. When her husband was deployed to Hattiesburg, Miss., with the Ohio National Guard, she wrote articles for the Vindicator about life at Camp Shelby.

Affiliations: Is a member and served as national president of the 37th Division Ladies Auxiliary, ITAM Post 3 Ladies Auxiliary, Reserve Officer’s Association Auxiliary, Sons of Italy Lodge 858 and St. Charles Church. Was recognized as designated Able Toastmaster with Toastmasters Inc.

Hobbies: Excellent cook and baker and won several blue ribbons at the Canfield Fair. Enjoys bridge and 500 and spending summers at her home at Geneva-on-the-Lake.

Celebrations: Family and friends will gather at Avion on the Water on Aug. 9 to celebrate her birthday.
