Astro advances in CABA Series


STRUTHERS — Ryan Patrick allowed just one run on six singles and struck out nine as the Astro Falcons defeated the Indiana Indians, 5-1, to advance in the single elimination championship round of the CABA World Series on Friday.

Matt Corner had a single and a double while Mark Warchol drove home a pair of runs with a double in the three-run second inning for Astro in a game played at Cene Park.

Kevin Davis had a pair of hits for the Indians.

Patrick has struck out 21 in his two starts in the tournament.

Babe Ruth 13s

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — Phil DiIanni knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead Youngstown 13-year-old all-stars to a 14-13 opening-round victory over Lexington, Ky., Friday at the Babe Ruth Ohio Valley Regional.

Harrison Wagner led Youngstown with four hits, while DiIanni, Mike Kindinis and Drew Beck all had two.

Zach Kuchmaner contributed four RBIs, while Tyler Spain and DiIanni each had three.

Edmond Pilolli got the win with a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

Youngstown plays the Northern Indiana state champions today at 9 a.m.

Babe Ruth 14s

ROBINSON, Ill. — The Youngstown 14-year-old all-Stars play Northern Indiana today at 9 a.m. in the Ohio Valley Regional.

On Friday, the Terry Landis-managed team defeated Southeast Kentucky, 6-5, in the 10-team double-elimination event.

Christopher Maze scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sean Coyne drew a walk.

Maze singled to lead off the seventh, then stole second. Mike Raschilla walked and Vic Kuchmaner’s grounded advanced both runners. Jacob Froats walked to load the bases before Coyne walked to bring Maze across.

Brandon Ritchie had a solo home run and pitched five shutout innings. Maze was chosen player-of-the-game.

A win this morning would give Youngstown a rest until Sunday at 2 p.m. A loss, would force Youngstown to play Sunday at 4:30.

The regional winner advances to the Babe Ruth World Series in Appleton, Wis.

In 2008, Landis’ 15-year-old all-stars finished third in the world series in Massachusetts. Anthony Raschilla piloted last year’s 13-year-old team to a fifth-place finish in the world series in Jamestown, N.Y.
