Shadden’s 6-hitter helps lift Hubbard


CORTLAND — Heather Shadden pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Hubbard High softball team to a 4-1 win over Lakeview on Wednesday.

Chelsea Callow contributed a two-run double while Alexis Neumeister had three singles and one RBI to key the Eagles (9-4, 5-1 AAC White Tier).

Abby Bensing took the mound loss with a three-hitter for Lakeview (5-6, 3-1).

Canfield 12, Beaver Local 1

LISBON — Melanie West homered, Cara Cupler tripled and Sarah Vrabel tossed a two-hitter for Canfield (9-7, 6-0 AAC Red).

Champion 14, Brookfield 2

BROOKFIELD — Lindsay Swipas and Katie Saluga each had three hits and Morgan White added two hits for Champion (11-1, 7-0 AAC Blue). White (6-0) struck out 12 and walked one, tossing a one-hitter.

For Brookfield (3-12, 1-6), Stephanie VanMeter doubled.

Girard 9, LaBrae 0

GIRARD — Lisa Holmes (6-5) pitched a seven-hitter with five strikeouts for Girard (7-5, 6-2 AAC). Emily Smercansky added two RBIs and Bryanna Jay had two singles and one RBI.

Lauren Crays had two singles for LaBrae (5-6, 4-3).

Newton Falls 15, Campbell 3

CAMPBELL — Blaine Chapman and Stephanie Blair each had two hits, two runs and a RBI for Newton Falls, while Ashley Walker had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run.

For Campbell (1-9, 0-6 AAC Blue), Alexis Tych went 3-for-3 and scored a run, Samantha Rivera had two hits and Danielle Donofrio two RBIs.

Struthers 2, Liberty 1

STRUTHERS — With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Wynter Wasilewski hit a deep grounder to short to score Mandy Ditman for the game-winner. Ditman led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a single by Sam Basista and moved to third on a deep fly ball by Nicolette Demyan.

Ashley Baron tossed a two-hitter and struck out eight for Struthers (9-10, 4-1 AAC White). Ellen Becker added two doubles. Demyan tripled to score the game’s first run.

Poland 11, Niles 0

POLAND — Sophomore Karah Pierce and junior Jessica D’Apolito each had a two-run single for the Bulldogs (13-3, 3-0 AAC Red Tier).

Nine strikeouts highlighted a two-hitter by Jenna Modic (7-1), a freshman who allowed two walks for the winners.

Stephanie Pierko and Melyssa Spowart each singled for Niles.

Warren Harding 15, Chaney 7

YOUNGSTOWN — Laura Howard slammed a three-run homer, one-run triple and two singles to lead Warren Harding. Lorna McMillian pitched a three hitter with five strikeouts to also spark the Raiders (4-7, 1-1 Steel Valley Conference).

Chaney is 2-8 and 0-2.

Ursuline 15, East 5

BOARDMAN — Sophomore Teresa Carkido had a double, two singles and four RBIs and freshman Erin Vukovich doubled, singled and drove in three. Sophomore Haley Sturtz and freshman Brianna Curd each had two hits for the Irish (12-4, 4-0 SVC).

Vukovich’s two-run double with one out in the bottom of the sixth ended the game when she knocked in Anna Donko and Malikka Caige.

Springfield 8, United 0

HANNOVERTON — Erica Burkey pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts for Springfield (11-5, 7-3 Inter Tri-County League Tier One).

Ashley Davis added a double, two singles and two RBIs while Rebecca Evan had a two-run double and Andrea Lyons three singles.

Hillary Hoppel had two singles for United (10-4, 8-2).

Mineral Ridge 5, Columbiana 0

MINERAL RIDGE — Freshman Abby Riffee homered, freshman Miranda Stith doubled and freshman Meghan Garland struck out nine during a two-hitter for the Rams (3-5).

Kinsey Barbato and Kaitlyn Steeb each singled for Columbiana (5-8).

Western Reserve 17, Leetonia 0

LEETONIA — Ashlee Grim pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts while Chelsea Korda had two doubles, a single and three RBIs and Sierra Hull two singles and three RBIs for Reserve (10-4, 9-0 ITCL).

Elizabeth Srock contributed a double, two singles and two RBIs and Sissy Stubbs two doubles to aid the Blue Devils.

Jackson-Milton 4, Lowellville 1

LOWELLVILLE — Lindsey Knipp (9-3) struck out seven with three walks to get the victory for Jackson-Milton (10-3, 5-2 ITCL2). Julie Franko added two hits, Cat Keck had two RBIs and Madde Griffiths scored twice.

For Lowellville (10-4, 5-3), Shawna McDowell had two hits.

Sebring 7, Southern 5

SALINEVILLE — Jillian Faudree went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored twice to lead Sebring (8-8, 6-2 ITCL2), while Jillian Faudree added two hits and two runs and Dani Seidel had two hits and three RBIs.

Marla Pitts had two hits, including a triple, to lead Southern.
