Electronic check register is timesaving idea

Dear Heloise: If you are computer-literate, you might find that setting up an electronic check register is a truly timesaving idea.

I set up a file with columns for date, type of transaction, check reference, transaction description and special notes, along with columns for the dollar activity, withdrawals, deposits and balance. It only took 10 or 15 minutes to set up, it calculates everything automatically (no more lost pennies or worse) and usually saves me from having to type everything out. Also, it can be re-sorted into a new file if you want to track expenses (e.g., how much money you spent at the grocers or the drugstore last year).

There are dedicated financial programs that do the same thing, but they use the basic spreadsheet software that is included with most computers, I didn’t need to purchase anything or learn a new program. I can look back to things I did last year or 10 years ago, and it’s always available — no looking for last year’s register. Mary Bailey Lawson, Landover, Md.

Dear Heloise: Cleaning the underside of the rubber splash guard and the inside of my garbage disposal used to be a task to detest.

A new, inexpensive toilet brush (cylindrical, with holder cup about the same diameter as the drain opening) solved the problem. I spray the opening and brush with cleaner, and I push the brush through the splash guard while turning the brush. Before removing, I drape a paper towel over the opening and around the handle to prevent debris from splashing. I repeat, turning the brush in the opposite direction, turn on the water and go in again for a good rinse. Works like magic, and the job is finished in seconds. Jeff Cole, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Dear Heloise: Several of your readers have written in about using guest towels. How about putting a paper-towel holder and liquid-soap dispenser out? I find it to be more sanitary and healthy. Fewer germs to pick up. I do this because I run a home day care. Ellen, New Jersey

Dear Heloise: I’m never sure how to decide which plants or flowers to plant around my house. So, my mother suggested planting some plants in large, movable containers (plant pot on wheels to move easily). I can then arrange them in the containers where I think they will look good. When they start to get big or bloom and they look right in that spot, I know next year that’s where they go. This works great, and I have shared it with many of my family and friends.
