CAMPBELL — A WRTA bus and a van collided Tuesday afternoon, sending multiple people to the hospital.

Youngstown police and fire departments responded to a call about 12:30 p.m. Witnesses said a woman driving the van, a Ford Aerostar, ran a red light and collided with the bus at the intersection of McCartney Road and Rutledge Drive.

Robert Irwin of Youngstown’s East Side was on the bus during the accident. “We had the right of way,” he said.

The accident is under investigation by Youngstown police.

Witnesses said the van was traveling east on McCartney when it struck the bus headed north on Rutledge. The bus swerved to avoid the car but was struck on the front driver’s side, jumped the curb and hit a tree in the front yard of 2180 McCartney.

The front bumper on the driver’s side was partially ripped off, and the body of the bus was dented and scratched. The windshield was also cracked in multiple places.

Irwin said a “couple people” were injured in the initial accident and when the bus hit the tree.

The female bus driver and several other passengers were taken to the hospital, witnesses said. Names and conditions for the driver and passengers were not available Tuesday evening.
