Visiting campaigners fined for voting in Ohio

COLUMBUS (AP) — Three people who came to Ohio for a get-out-the-vote effort during last year’s presidential campaign have been fined $1,000 each for voting in the state.

Daniel Hausman, 32, of New York City, 50-year-old Amy Little of New Paltz, N.Y., and 30-year-old Yolanda Hippensteele of California pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor illegal voting charges.

Prosecutors say they cast early, absentee ballots without meeting residency requirements.

Hippensteele blamed her actions on a misunderstanding.

The county prosecutor in Columbus had warned visiting campaigners they couldn’t vote in Ohio if they didn’t plan to stay past the election.

The judge in Columbus who fined the three also gave each a year of probation and a 60-day suspended jail sentence.
