Deputy pleads innocent to drug-related charge

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County deputy sheriff has pleaded innocent to a fifth-degree felony charge of permitting drug abuse. She had been indicted by the county grand jury April 9.

Deputy Angela Eaddy, 53, a nine-year county employee, entered her plea Tuesday before Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, who released her on her own recognizance.

A tentative trial date was set for July 6 before Judge Maureen A. Sweeney. Eaddy has retained Atty. J. Gerald Ingram to represent her.

The indictment alleges Eaddy permitted drug abuse at her residence at 56 Garfield St., where police said they seized drug paraphernalia and guns in a March 31 raid.

Eaddy has been on paid administrative leave from the sheriff’s department since the raid. Her most recent assignment there was to road patrol.

An informant made controlled buys of crack cocaine for police at Eaddy’s house in September 2008 and in January and March of this year, police said.

Reward offered in case of Hopewell vandalism

STRUTHERS — A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people who vandalized the historic Hopewell Furnace. Anyone with information should call the Struthers Police Department at (330) 755-9849.

The Hopewell Furnace, built by Dan and James Heaton in 1802 or 1803 along the banks of Yellow Creek in what is now Struthers, was the first blast furnace in Ohio. Heaton family members from Illinois visited the site April 4 along with Mill Creek MetroParks officials, Struthers Historical Society and local history buffs.

The vandalism was discovered and reported to Struthers police April 20. The report says 10 large rocks were removed from the entrance of the furnace structure and rolled down an embankment and that the immediate area was littered with beer cans.
