HUBBARD — First United Methodist Church, 48 Church St., will sponsor a series of three free seminars, “Surviving Tough Times,” for people in the community who need help during these difficult economic times.

Don Dickens of Trumbull 211 will speak at 7 p.m. Monday on how to navigate the system to find help with food, family medical care, utilities and the crisis of unemployment.

On May 11, Sam Malusky-Bacon of Empowering and Strengthening Ohio’s People will address how to negotiate with mortgage lenders to avoid foreclosure.

On May 19, Victor Russell of Consumer Credit Counseling will discuss credit reports, identity theft and debt collection.

After each session, there will be time for participants to ask the experts about matters of personal concern.

5th-Ward meeting

YOUNGSTOWN — Councilman Paul Drennen is hosting a town-hall meeting for the 5th Ward at 6 p.m. today at Kirkmere Elementary School, 2851 Kirk Road.

The mayor and city and Mahoning County officials will attend the meeting, Drennen said. Citizens can ask questions of the officials at the meeting.

Animal sanctuary benefit

SALEM — Antiques and gently used items will be for sale to benefit the animals of Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Campf’s Service Co., 1859 Depot Road. Alchemy Acres is a no-kill animal sanctuary where animals are treated for all physical and psychological problems before being placed in permanent homes.
