Article aimed at wrong target

EDITOR:

If one only read the headline or the subheadline of “Assault weapons under fire” last Thursday, one would reach a very different conclusion than if they read the entire article. It seems obvious to me that the intention of this article was to implicate so-called “assault rifles” as the blame for some recent shootings.

Unfortunately, too many readers probably were left with this impression as I doubt too many took the time to read the entire article. Thankfully, Capt. Tim Bowers and Detective Sgt. Jason Simon seem to have it right. In the article Capt. Bowers states that there is not an increase in the number of weapons being taken off the streets by police and that these weapons have been on the streets for decades. Sgt. Simon said that most people are responsible gun owners and that “It’s not really the gun, it’s the person and their intent.” Perfect case in point is the recent headline of a murder in Australia of a man shot 30 times with a nail gun. It is the person and not the weapon used. PETE MOTOLENICH
