YSU softball swept by Butler


INDIANAPOLIS — Junior Cheryl Cale turned in two solid pitching performances, but the Youngstown State softball team left 12 runners stranded in Game 1 and tallied just three hits in Game 2 as Butler swept the Penguins, 1-0, and 3-1, on Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins fall to 7-35 overall and 3-16 in the league while Butler improves to 23-25 overall and 12-10 in the Horizon League.

In the opener, Cale struck out four while scattering just six hits, but the Penguins offense could not come up with the big hit, leaving seven runners in scoring position stranded on the base paths.

The Penguins also could not capitalize on four Butler errors.

Junior Kim Klonowski went 2-for-4 in the opener.

In the nightcap, Cale went the distance for her second complete game of the day but the Penguins offense could only muster three singles.

The Penguins and Bulldogs close out the series today at noon.

Baseball

Youngstown State’s Horizon League doubleheader at Milwaukee scheduled for Saturday was rained out.

The games will not be made up.

The Penguins play a doubleheader today at Butler.

YSU swept Butler in a three-game series earlier this month.

Tennis

INDIANAPOLIS — The women’s tennis team fell to No. 1 UIC 4-0 after advancing past both Wright State and Cleveland State in the Horizon League Championships.

The Penguins play Butler at 9 a.m. this morning for a chance to claim third place in the tournament.

Sarah Lynch dropped her match in the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-2.

Gretchen Cloern fell 6-3, 6-0 in the fifth slot and Nicole Haralambopoulos lost 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2

Lynch and Cloern lost their No. 1 doubles match 8-2 and Haralambopoulos and Hankle dropped their match 8-3 at No. 2.
