Mock crash canceled

CANFIELD — A mock crash planned for Friday at Canfield fairgrounds was canceled. Susan Viars, of the Mahoning Safe Communities, said only two schools, Salem High School and the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, showed interest. The invitation had been extended to all schools in Mahoning and Columbiana counties, she said.

Viars said it’s possible the event will be brought back next year. A DVD of last year’s mock crash is available for teachers to show their classes. The purpose of a mock crash is to educate high school students about the dangers of driving while under the influence and driving while distracted, according to a Mahoning Safe Communities newsletter.

Young murder trial

YOUNGSTOWN — Jury selection for the capital murder trial of Curtis Young will continue Monday, with the jury tentatively scheduled to visit the crime scene Monday afternoon and opening statements from the lawyers likely Tuesday morning, according to Robert E. Regula Jr., court administrator.

Throughout last week, prospective jurors were interviewed by the prosecuting and defense lawyers and Judge Maureen A. Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, individually and out of earshot of other potential jurors.

A spokeswoman for the judge said two alternates are being selected in addition to the panel of 12 regular jurors.

Young, 26, of North Center Street, is charged with the July 31, 2007, aggravated murders of his ex-girlfriend, Helen Moore, 29, of Cassius Street, her full-term fetus, and her 8-year-old son, Ceonei.

The charges carry firearm and death-penalty specifications.
