Akron councilman wants case to be sealed

AKRON (AP) — Akron’s city council president has asked a judge to seal his misdemeanor conviction for attempting to carry a loaded handgun onto a plane.

An attorney for Marco Sommerville filed the motion last month, saying Sommerville never believed that forgetting to remove the gun from his briefcase deserved a criminal charge.

The attorney also says the conviction has created problems for Sommerville when he applies for loans.

Akron-Canton Airport authorities confiscated the .38-caliber gun at a security checkpoint in November 2007. Sommerville pleaded no contest to a the misdemeanor gun charge the following month and was ordered to pay $500 fine by Summit County Common Pleas Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer.
