EDITOR:

I was sorry to hear the news that Byzantine Catholic Central School was closing, I have had many friends and relatives educated at this fine school. I also have had, and still do have, friends working there as educators and coaches.

I hope the remaining students will continue their education at other Catholic schools.

What I do not understand is why Mr. Kosar did not include St. Joseph the Provider of Campbell as a possible choice for students to attend. He only suggested to the parents St. Nicholas of Struthers and St. Luke of Boardman. St. Joseph is a strong and stable school with no signs or talk of closing. Our pastor, Father Mike Swierz, has worked long and tirelessly to keep our school open while others look for reasons to close. He has put together a strong and caring staff directed by a very dedicated principal, Cheryl L. Jablonski.

Some parents at BCC have issued concerns about going to a Roman Catholic school coming from a Byzantine Catholic school. St. Joseph School is a Catholic school, just like Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline, where many BCC alumni have and still do attend. Do not let others influence your decision of where your children should be educated. Time permitting, visit all the schools. This is a very important decision in your child’s future.

I myself have been here at St. Joseph for nearly 40 years as the boys’ basketball coach. I have seen us as a strong school, then weaken, and now growing stronger once again. As a Marine veteran we have a saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Here at St. Joe’s we face problems, work through them and move on.
