READY FOR DERBY: Although this Kentucky Derby event may be just a figment of the imagination, it will be celebrated May 2 during a unique fundraiser planned by the Junior League of Youngstown. All decked out in traditional big hats for the event are, from left, Barbara Banks, co-chair of the JLY Fund Development Committee; Michele Grant, JLY president; Susan Stewart, co-chair of the fund development committee; and Liz Skeels, committee member. They are joined by Madison Juillerate, who is riding Geezer, a grandson of Kentucky Derby winner Native Dancer, owned by Whitney Resch of Mortgaged Acres, a horse-riding ranch for kids in Poland.

YOUNGSTOWN — The Junior League of Youngstown is inviting the public to participate in the celebration of the Kentucky Derby and the 135th Run for the Roses on May 2 by taking part in a unique nonevent fundraiser.

Those participating in the tongue-in-cheek appeal for funds are encouraged to wear fantastic big hats around town or to display a red rose as they enjoy the event at a place of their choice throughout the day.

Each will be asked to place a bet (make a donation) in support of the organization and its efforts to promote volunteerism, develop the potential of women, and to improve communities through the action and leadership of trained volunteers.

For an exclusive event invitation and donor form, contact the JLY office at (330) 743-3200. Those returning the invitation with their “bets” by the April 24 deadline can:

•Reserve a spot for one near the starting gate for $35.

•Reserve a spot for two at the finish line for $70.

•Be part of the Winner’s Circle for a donation.

Proceeds from the virtual Kentucky Derby, Run for the Roses event will help support the many projects the JLY has been instrumental in establishing, such as the docent program at the Butler Museum of American Art, the Ronald McDonald House, Hope House, Day Break, Leadership Mahoning Valley and the Children’s Museum of the Valley.
