Interesting facts: When she transported her unit commander to jobs at forward operating positions in Iraq, she drove with her M-16 pointed out the window.

J. LORI STONE

Residence: Austintown

Education: Graduate, Austintown Fitch High School, 1965; Youngstown State University, 1977.

Military service: Air Force, 33 years total. Active duty, 1965-1967; traditional reservist, 1975-1977; full-time Air Reserve technician, 1977-2006.

Family: Two daughters, 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Interesting facts: After Stone graduated from college, she chose not to become an officer because, as a mother, she would have had to move around too much.

DONNA BURFORD

Education: Graduate, Struthers High School, 1956.

Military service: Air Force, 1956-’59.

Family: Husband, Glenn; two daughters and a son; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Interesting facts: Burford’s is a military family. Her father, James Schweitzer, served in the Army during World War II. Her son, Donald, served in the Marine Corps and retired from the Washington Air National Guard. Two grandsons served in the Army in Iraq, and a granddaughter served in the Navy. “My grandchildren said, If grandma can do it, I can do it.”

Quote: “I think everyone should go to the military after they graduate from high school. I think every civilian should visit the VA to see the people who served. They would gain a greater appreciation of what those men and women have done for us and are going through for us.”
