Canfield beats Jamestown 16-1 to stay perfect
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Senior Dan Banna homered, singled and drove in three runs to lead the Canfield High baseball team to a 16-1 win over Jamestown (N.Y.) in the Mingo Bay Classic on Wednesday.
Matt Matune (1-0) struck out two, tossing a five-hitter over five innings to get the win.
Brett Cooper added two hits, while Jared Turocy had an RBI triple and Matt Harmon added an RBI double for the Cardinals (6-0), who are 3-0 in the tournament.
They play a semifinal game today. If they win, they’ll advance to Friday’s tournament championship game.
Jamestown is 2-2.
Boardman 4, Virginia Cox 3
ORLANDO, Fla. — Patrick O’Brien (3-0) pitched a five-hitter over eight innings — his third complete game of the season — to lead Boardman in ESPN/Disney’s Wide World of Sports tournament.
Kevin McCullough and Nick Dingell both had RBIs for the Spartans (7-0).
Softball Poland 6, Seneca Falls, N.Y. 0
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Erin Gabriel and Jenna Modic combined for a four-hit shutout and also led the way at the plate as Poland improved to 7-1 in tournament play at the Grand Strand tournament.
Gabriel struck out 13 batters in five innings and Modic pitched the final two innings, striking out two more.
Modic also had a home run, double and single and drove in five runs, while Gabriel added a double and Megan Hirschbeck had two singles.
