Columbiana commissioners raise dog adoption fee

LISBON — The cost of a dog at Columbiana County Dog Pound just increased for a good cause.

The county commissioners today voted unanimously to raise the cost of a dog’s adoption from $80 to $100. The change was made retroactive to April 1.

The increase will cover an increase in fees from Angels for Animals in southern Mahoning County.

Angels for Animals does the spaying and neutering of animals for the Columbiana pound. The county pound doesn’t do the operations.

Angels for Animals recently had increased its fees from $65 to $85.

The commissioners said the arrangement with Angels has worked out well for years.

Commissioner Jim Hoppel said the Angels organization previously had donated a truck to the county to take Columbiana County dogs back and forth for their spaying or neutering.

The commissioners also approved spending $2,075 to complete an outside cement walk at the dog pound. It will help complete a project to cover caged runways so animals can go outside for exercise and go inside to get warm on their own.
