NILES — When the Niles Historical Society meets for its annual spring dinner April 29 at Ciminero’s Banquet Center, 123 Main St., President Abraham Lincoln will be the topic of the evening.
The speaker at the 6 p.m. dinner will be Christina Fischer, a social studies teacher and library media specialist at the Edgewood Senior high School in Ashtabula. She is a graduate of Youngstown State University, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in education, and Mansfield University in Mansfield, Pa., where she received a master’s degree in education.
Her message will focus on Springfield, Ill., and Lincoln’s relationships. Lincoln was born 200 years ago. Fischer has studied Lincoln for years, has visited his home and was a recipient of the prestigious Horace Mann-Abraham Lincoln Fellowship in 2008. After the dinner, volunteers of the society will be recognized for their years of dedicated service.
In 1979 the historical society was charged with the creation of a museum in Niles. The Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., has been maintained by the group since that time.
The public is invited to the dinner and encouraged to support the work of the society. A donation of $20 per ticket will help defray expenses. The deadline for reservations is April 22, and tickets are available from the society by calling (330) 544-2143.
