Mount’s Loy named

AUSTINTOWN — Mount Union College junior Aubrey Loy was named Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

Loy won the long jump with a mark of 17-8.25 and just missed posting an NCAA provisional mark in winning the triple jump with a mark of 36-9.50 at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio Wesleyan Univ.

Raider Beck selected

AUSTINTOWN — Mount Union College sophomore Mary-Catherine Beck was named OAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Beck swept a pair of singles and doubles victories against both Otterbein College and Wilmington College. She is now 13-2 in singles with wins in nine of her last 10.

Widdoes honored

AUSTINTOWN — Mount Union College junior Brian Widdoes has been named OAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.

Widdoes has won 11-straight singles matches including wins at No. 3 singles last week against Otterbein College and Wilmington College.

Murray recognized

AUSTINTOWN — Mount Union College sophomore Lucas Murray was named OAC Men’s Golfer of the Week.

Murray earned co-medalist honors as he fired a one-over-par 142 (69-73) at the Ohio Wesleyan Strimer Invitational.

League under way

The Mahoning Valley men’s golf league will open play on Wednesday at Bedford Trails.

Kent State track

AKRON — The Kent State men’s 4x400 relay team took first place with a time of 3:16.40 at the Northeast Ohio Quad Meet.

Sophomore Matt Moffett (Salem) ran a leg on the relay then he took second in the 400 (48.75).

Freshman Audrey Maheu (Warren JFK) was second in the women’s 800 (2:12.71) and Jessica Moore (Boardman) ran 2:18.34 for fourth.

Thiel College track

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Two Thiel College athletes were recognized as Presidents’ Athletic Conference women’s track performers of the week after a meet at Robert Morris.

Cara Riffe (Reynolds High) won the 200 (25.88) and the 400 (59.71) and Latoya Locke (Farrell) was second in the triple jump (37-6).

Fidrych dies at 54

BOSTON — Former All-Star pitcher Mark “the Bird” Fidrych was found dead Monday in an apparent accident at his farm. He was 54.

Worcester County district attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said a family friend found Fidrych about 2:30 p.m. Monday beneath a dump truck at his Northborough, Mass., farm. He appeared to be working on the truck, Early said.

The colorful right-hander was the American League rookie of the year in 1976 when he went 19-9 with a 2.34 ERA.

Giesey expires

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Paul Giesey, wide receivers coach for the Slippery Rock Univ. football team for the past five seasons, passed away Monday after an extended illness.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Fox Funeral Home in Saxonburg. Visitation hours have been set for Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Thursday morning from 9-11 a.m.

Kalas dead at 73

WASHINGTON — Radio and TV broadcaster Harry Kalas, whose baritone delivery and signature “Outta here!” home run calls provided the soundtrack to Philadelphia baseball for nearly four decades, died Monday after collapsing in the broadcast booth before the Phillies’ game against the Washington Nationals. He was 73.

Familiar to millions of sports fans outside Philadelphia for his voiceover work with NFL Films, “Harry the K” was beloved at home.

Bruce Snyder dies

PHOENIX — Bruce Snyder, whose 20-year career as a college football coach included an unbeaten regular season at Arizona State, has died after a 10-month fight against cancer.

Snyder died at his Phoenix home Monday, the university said. He coached the Sun Devils from 1992-2000. His 1996 team went 11-0 in the regular season before a last-minute 20-17 loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Snyder also was the coach at Utah State from 1976-82 and California from 1987-91. His overall record was 126-105-5. At Arizona State, Snyder was 58-47, second only to Frank Kush for victories with the Sun Devils.
