Remains in exposed coffins to be reburied in Ohio
LEWIS CENTER, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say skeletal remains found in coffins exposed by erosion will be reburied at an Ohio cemetery.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials estimate that the 10 coffins discovered this week at Alum Creek Lake near Columbus are at least 75 years old. The Corps says half the coffins contained human bone fragments that will be reburied in Berlin Township Cemetery.
In the 1970s, about 1,400 graves were exhumed from a cemetery in the area and moved to Berlin Township.
Corps spokesman Chuck Minsker has said it will be difficult to identify the remains, partly because records from the first cemetery were destroyed by a fire in about 1945.
