Prevent poisoning

When it comes to household chemicals, poisoning is a serious risk. The most common cases of poisoning aren’t caused by the cleaners under your kitchen sink but by the prescription and over-the-counter drugs in your medicine cabinet. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers these tips for keeping your kids safe:

Keep drugs in childproof, out-of-reach cabinets.

Avoid taking medicine in front of kids because they often like to imitate you.

Never call medicine “candy.”

Don’t leave your next dose on the counter or table within reach of little ones.

Don’t leave medicines sitting out when you are done. Put them away immediately.

Post the poison control number near your phone: (800) 222-1222. This line is useful if the victim is awake and alert. But, if he has collapsed or is not breathing, call 911.
