9 treated after crash on state Route 11
CANFIELD — The head-on collision of a car and a van on state Route 11 southbound just north of U.S. Route 224 sent nine people to the hospital Friday evening and closed Route 11 southbound for an hour and 15 minutes between Mahoning Avenue and Route 224.
The elderly car driver remains in critical condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center, where the van driver was treated and released.
The southbound van, driven by Dale Shaum, 35, of Leetonia, collided with the northbound car, driven by Gerson Laubender, 85, of Sandusky, at 9:52 p.m., according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The drivers; Shaum’s wife, who was a van passenger; and six juvenile van passengers were taken to the hospital.
Trooper Stanley Bittinger of the patrol’s Canfield post, who is investigating the crash, said he did not know Shaum’s wife’s first name or the names and ages of the children.
No information was available from the hospital Saturday about Shaum’s wife’s condition, and a hospital spokeswoman said the hospital doesn’t release conditions of minors.

Loss was estimated at $5,000 to the two-story, wooden-frame house at 362 E. Florida Ave., and $1,500 to its contents.
