BASEBALL
Poland 9, Salem 1
POLAND — Winning pitcher Ryan Rovnak (1-0) scattered four hits over six innings. Phil Lipari tripled and doubled while Matt Pitzulo homered and drove in three runs for the Bulldogs (3-0). Zack Custer had two singles and scored three runs. Nick Elliot doubled, Drew Petro had two hits and Sean Gabriel drove in two runs. For the Quakers (0-3), Nick Lesky had two hits, Dan Gagnon doubled and Randy Wyand drove in their run.
Mooney 6, Stow 5
STRUTHERS — Anthony Franceschelli drove in the winning run for the Cardinals (2-0) in the bottom of the ninth inning at Cene Park. Franceschelli’s three hits included a double. Brad Byers’ two hits included a double while Mark Warchol picked up the mound win. Dante Lewis had two hits. For Stow (2-1), Joe Clark had three hits.
Niles 9, Newton Falls 2
NEWTON FALLS — Mike Livi’s three hits included a double and he scored twice. Mike Watson and winning pitcher Evan Bollenger doubled.
Niles 12, Salem 6
NILES — Nick Harper had two hits and an RBI and Harper pitched four innings of one-hit relief for the save. Harper, the starting center fielder, also struck out four after replacing starter Nic Charnas in the third inning. Dustin Petzak knocked in two runs for Niles, which had 12 hits. Nic Mientkiewicz, Austin Lykins and Joe Livi also had two hits apiece for the winners. All of Salem’s runs came in the third inning.
SOFTBALL
Edgewood 3, Mooney 0
BOARDMAN — Edgewood (2-0) scored its runs in the first inning on a bunt, a walk, two groundballs through a drawn-in infield and a mishandled rundown. Winning pitcher Megan Dragon (2-0) struck out 14. For the Cardinals (3-1), Kelcie Herberger’s two hits included a double. Jamie Clausen struck out seven.
South County (Va.) 3, Howland 1
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — South County, Va. snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth inning of a five-inning game during the Grand Strand Tournament. Abby Nicholas struck out six for Howland, which placed fourth upon completion of the five-day Grand Strand competition. The Tigers return home with a 6-2 record.
Massillon Perry 3, Canfield 2
AKRON — Carlee Hart’s two-run double staked the Cardinals (3-2) to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Perry scored runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to win the Ohio Invitational Tournament game.
