Gilmour Academy sweeps to Champion Invitational crowns


CHAMPION — Gates Mills Gilmour Academy swept the team championships at the Champion Invitational track and field meet Thursday.

Gilmour won the boys title with 156 points, edging Garrettsville Garfield (142) and Lordstown (108.5).

The Gilmour girls won with 169 points, with Lordstown second (110.5) and Akron Hoban third (91.5).

Kayla Ellks of Lordstown won the long jump with an effort of 15 feet, 11 inches. She also finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.30 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (51.50), and was the anchor on the second-place 4x200 relay (1:54.60), joined by Jessica Reinke, JoHanna Morgan and Katie Bellay.

Also for Lordstown, Preston Hall won the boys 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 16.60 seconds, Matt Tarchick was second in the 3200 (11:03.60) and Courtney Beatty was runner-up in the girls 1600 (6:02.90).

For Champion, Tyler Day won the boys 400 (51.60), while Andrew Austin won the boys high jump (6-5). The runner-up, Matt Bradley of Garrettsville, cleared 5-10.

Also in the girls competition Brookfield’s Jennifer Sanson won the discus (96-5). Angie Kirila of Brookfield was second in the 400 (1:04.40) and Ali Martino was runner-up in the high jump (4-8).

Also finishing second were Champion’s 4x200 boys relay (1:35.80) and Lordstown’s 4x100 boys relay (48.00). Champion’s Tyler Morrall was second in the long jump (18-6).
