Lower’s two-hitter keys Ursuline


BAZETTA — Junior Casey Lower pitched a two-hitter with 17 strikeouts while junior Sarah Ingalls had two solo homers for the Ursuline High softball team, which beat Warren JFK 2-0 on Wednesday.

After Lower gave up two singles in the second inning, she retired 16 of the next 17 batters, allowing just a walk.

Senior Miranda Carkido had a single and double and senior Rebecca Hartz had two singles for the Irish (2-1, 1-0 Steel Valley).

Cardinal Mooney 19, Chaney 2

BOARDMAN — Junior Shayla DeCapita drove in a school-record eight runs to lead Mooney.

DeCapita socked a three-run homer, three-run triple and two-run double.

Kelcie Herberger smashed a two-run homer and a pair of one-run singles for four RBIs for the Cardinals (3-0, 1-0 SVC).

Jessica Gavin driled a two-run homer for Chaney (0-1, 0-1).

Canfield 13, Lakeview 2

CORTLAND — Cara Cupler had two RBIs and Laura Beck had three hits as Canfield (3-0) took advantage of nine Lakeview errors to pull away.

Winning pitcher Sarah Vrabel and reliever Carlee Hart combined to hold the Bulldogs to two runs on seven hits.

Lex Sidley had a double for Lakeview (1-2).

Howland 6, Green Sea Floyds (S.C.) 5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Tori McCormick singled, doubled and drove in three runs, including the game-winner, to lead Howland in the Grand Strand tournament.

Abby Nicholas added three hits and Melanie Cope had two RBIs. Cope also struck out 10 and walked two to get the mound win.

Howland 7, Forest Park 6

Nicholas struck out 13 without a walk to get the win, while Melanie Cope had three hits and two RBIs.

Gina Albani had the game-winning hit for the Tigers (6-0), while Carla Cope, Nicholas, Jena Debiec and Erika Nites each had two hits and Nites added three RBIs.

Struthers 10, Beaver Local 2

STRUTHERS — Ashley Baron tossed a six-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also had four hits, including two homers, for Struthers.

Dom Martino and Ellen Becker each added three hits.

Hubbard 6, Niles 2

NILES — Senior Heather Shadden struck out 12 during a four-hitter and senior catcher Jessica Lunt had a double and triple and two RBIs for Hubbard (1-2).

Spowart had a single and double for Niles (1-1).

Champion 12, Girard 1

GIRARD — Morgan White (2-0) tossed a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and three walks to lead Champion (3-0), which put the game away with eight runs in the sixth inning.

Katie Saluga went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Taylor Petersal added two hits, including a homer, and three RBIs.

Missy Weitzman went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk for Girard (0-3).

Newton Falls 2, Brookfield 1

BROOKFIELD — For Newton Falls, Stephanie Blair and Caitlin Gumina had RBI doubles in a two-run second inning.

Blaine Chapman had two singles for the winners (1-1).

Junior Erica Ziegler and senior Stephanie VanMeter had a single apiece for Brookfield. VanMeter’s hit in the bottom of the seventh produced the only run for the Warriors (0-3).

Sebring 7, Lowellville 3

SEBRING — Jillian Faudree went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer for Sebring (3-2, 3-0 ITCL Tier Two). Jillian Faudree added two hits including a double.

Cori Pavlicko struck out 12 and walked two, pitching a six-hitter for Lowellville (1-1, 1-1).
