Affairs of the heart

BOARDMAN — Anyone who is interested in heart-related issues is invited to join Mended Hearts, Chapter 7, a support group, which meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Azalea Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Guest speakers discuss health-related problems at each meeting. An optional dinner is available at 5:30 p.m. at the Terrace Cafe.

Scholarship applications

YOUNGSTOWN — The North Star Patchwork Training Center is an educational and economic self-development program for low-income women of all ages throughout Mahoning County. The center will be accepting scholarship applications for the four-month program from 9 am. to 2 p.m. April 16 and 17 at 192 Haseltine Ave. Contact Bishop Lillie North for more information.

The center needs a YSU computer student to teach computer classes, and an experienced person to teach quilting, arts and crafts.

Missionary society to sponsor Pink Tea

YOUNGSTOWN — The Williams-Heath Missionary Society of St. Andrewes AME Church, 521 W. Earle Ave., is inviting the public to its 47th annual Pink Tea from 4 to 6 p.m. April 26.

There will be a program, refreshments and complimentary corsages and boutonnieres. Guests are encouraged to wear something pink.

Frances Donald is chair for the tea, and Lula Stubbins is co-chair.

Horticulture scholarships

YOUNGSTOWN — Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown will give a $500 horticulture scholarship to a student planning to study horticulture in the fall of 2009 or who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary program at any accredited college or university in the United States. The student must be a resident of Mahoning or a surrounding county.

Woman’s Heart Day to be sponsored by HMHP

YOUNGSTOWN — Humility of Mary Health Partners, 1044 Belmont Ave., will sponsor a Woman’s Heart Day, a premier health event, from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 at the Chevrolet Centre.

No registration is required for the free health screenings, refreshments, informational programs, giveaways, health and wellness presentations, makeup demonstrations, and massage therapy.

Youngster celebrates birthday in caring way

YOUNGSTOWN — Maxana Grubb, 196 Audubon Drive, Snyder, N.Y., a granddaughter of George and Mary Jane Senedak, 2331 Chaney Circle, celebrated her seventh birthday by helping others.

The youngster asked invited guests to take bags of nonperishable foods to her party instead of gifts. As a result, she was able to donate 138 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Western New York, which provides food to about 95,000 needy individuals each month through its 400 member agencies.
