Horse hurts hoof

NEW YORK — Quality Road has a quarter crack in his right hind hoof, putting in doubt his status for the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

The Daily Racing Form reported on its Web site Monday that the Florida Derby winner galloped at Belmont Park and came back to the barn with blood dripping from his foot.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens said that he is “very concerned” about the problem but that it’s premature to say the colt won’t run in the Derby.

Quality Road is the second major Derby contender to encounter a problem.

The Pamplemousse, one of the West Coast’s leading 3-year-olds, was scratched from last Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby because of a lesion in his left front leg. He’s expected to be out at least six months.

Wilson named coach

American hockey teams from the World Cup to the world championships to the Olympics.

The squad he will take into next year’s Vancouver Games will look nothing like any over the past two decades.

Wilson, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ bench boss and a USA Hockey fixture as a player and coach for over 30 years, was chosen Monday as coach of the 2010 men’s Olympic team and the club that will participate in the world championships this month in Switzerland.

Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Churchill Downs is one step closer to becoming the first North American track to receive safety accreditation from the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

Inspectors from the NTRA’s Safety & Integrity Alliance visited the home of the Kentucky Derby on Monday, interviewing horsemen and track officials while reviewing everything from the starting gate to the testing barn.
