BOARDMAN — The Youngstown State women’s tennis team earned its fourth shutout of the year and its second Horizon League win on Sunday morning with a 7-0 victory over Valpo. The Penguins swept the singles matches in straight sets and claimed all three doubles matches. Sarah Lynch played at No. 1 singles, defeating Kim Sajevic 6-4, 6-4. Lauren Hankle defeated Molly Keifer 6-2, 7-5 in the second spot. Anna Volkova downed Jenny Schwartz 6-4, 6-1. Tanisha Welch beat Katie Bilyeu 6-1, 6-0. Gretchen Cloern won her third straight match of the season in the No. 5 spot 6-4, 6-0 and Nicole Haralambopoulos won her match in convincing fashion in the 6th spot, 6-0, 6-0. At doubles, Cloern and Lynch teamed up to win 8-2. Hankle and Haralambopoulos beat Sjevic and Bilyeu, 8-1 and Volkova and Lynch won 8-0. The team will to host UIC at 6 p.m. on Friday at the YSU tennis courts.
Softball
The series finale between YSU’s softball team and UIC was cancelled due to cold temperatures and rain and snow in the forecast. The Penguins return to action to host Robert Morris in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
