Significant symbols
Numerous items represent religious importance as it relates to this season were displayed during Sunday’s Lenten fair. Among them:
Bread: Recognizes Jesus as the bread of life.
Crown of thorns: Symbolizes the suffering and humiliation placed on Jesus during the trial before Pontius Pilate.
Robin: The bird flew down to remove a thorn from the brow of Jesus, causing a drop of his blood to stain its breast. Through an act of love, the bird earned the red badge of courage.
Dice: After Jesus’ death, some soldiers rolled them to determine who would be the recipient of his meager possessions.
Bowl and pitcher set with towel: Represents Jesus’ washing the disciples’ feet.
Pretzels: Thought to be ancient Christianity’s Lenten bread dating possibly to the fourth century, with spiritual meaning.
Lilies: Symbolize beauty and the resurrection of hope; associated with the Virgin Mary.
Dogwood tree: According to legend, the cross on which Jesus was crucified was made from such a tree.
