Vindy needs golf information

YOUNGSTOWN — The Vindicator sports department is accepting golf tournament information that will run in its weekly golf calendar beginning May 3 and running every Sunday through the end of the season.

If you are a tournament director or are holding a golf benefit, send your information by e-mail (sports@vindy.com), fax (330-747-6712) or mail to the Vindicator Sports Department, Box 780, Youngstown, 44501-0780. No information will be accepted over the phone.

Tournament information must include, title, date, golf course and a contact person with phone number.

Regular season league results also should be sent to the same addresses and will also be published on Sunday with a Friday noon deadline to get in that week’s edition.

Curbstoners

BOARDMAN — Middleweight boxer Billy Lyell of Niles will be the guest speaker of the Curbstone Coaches Association when the group meets Monday at noon at the Blue Wolf Catering Center on Lockwood Boulevard.

Youngstown Oldtimers

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association will hold their monthly meeting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Field. Dues are being collected.

State gymnastics

NILES — The Youngstown Gymnastics Center performed well at the recent state meet at the Ralph Infante Wellness Center.

All seven competitors advanced to regional competition.

Level Eight competitors included Hannah Estephan, 11, of Boardman (first in uneven bars, third all-around), Lily Testa, 12, of Boardman (first on balance beam, second all-around), Jenae Shar, 12, of Leetonia (second vault, eighth all-around), Jennifer Sklenar, 13, of Canfield (third on bars, fifth all-around). Those four will compete in the Findlay regional on April 18.

Meet the Renegades

COLUMBIANA — A “Meet the Renegades” pasta dinner for the newly formed semi-pro football team, the Crestview Renegades, will be April 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at Shellabella’s Restaurant. Cost is $8, but children 6 and under are free. Carryout is available.

Sullivan Award

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Olympic gold medalist gymnasts Nastia Liuki and Shawn Johnson and North Carolina basketball star Tyler Hansbrough are among the finalists for the Sullivan Award.

The other finalists for the award honoring the nation’s top amateur athlete are Stanford volleyball player Cynthia Barboza and the men’s Olympic 400-meter freestyle relay team.

The winner will be announced April 15 in New York.

Liukin, of Parker, Texas, and Johnson, of West Des Moines, Iowa, combined to win nine medals at the Beijing Games. Liukin was the all-around champion and Johnson won the balance beam. Hansbrough has led the Tar Heels to the Final Four in Detroit.

Sunderland out as Penn State coach

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State is searching for a new wrestling coach following the resignation of Troy Sunderland.

Athletic director Tim Curley said in a statement that Sunderland’s resignation was effective Saturday. The school will begin a national search for a replacement.

Sunderland graduated from Penn State in 1993. He coached 11 seasons at his alma mater, with four Top 10 finishes at the NCAAs, including a third-place finish in 2008.

The Nittany Lions slipped to 17th at nationals this season, and a seventh-place finish in the Big Ten tournament.

Sounders unbeaten

TORONTO — Freddie Ljungberg scored his first MLS goal, Kasey Keller recorded his third consecutive shutout and the expansion Seattle Sounders remained perfect with a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on Saturday.

Steve Zakuani also scored for Seattle (3-0-0), which has yet to allow a goal through the first three games of its debut season.

It was the first loss of the season for Toronto (1-1-1), which beat Kansas City two weeks ago before tying Columbus last Saturday.

Volvo in-port race

RIO DE JANEIRO — Telefonica Blue has won the Volvo Ocean Race’s in-port event in Guanabara Bay.

It was the fourth of the race’s seven in-port regattas, which give spectators a close look at the boats and crews taking part in the round-the-world race.

The winner, skippered by Bouwe Bekking, gained four points in the overall standings Saturday. In-port races award 20 percent of the total race points.

Puma was second followed by Delta Lloyd and Ericsson 4, Telefonica Black, Green Dragon and Ericsson 3.

The boats are to begin the sixth leg on April 11 when they head for Boston. The race began from Alicante, Spain, on Oct. 11 and is to end June 27 in St. Petersburg, Russia.
