Cleveland’s mayor won’t take pay raise

CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland’s mayor has turned down a pay raise as the city works to trim costs.

Mayor Frank Jackson’s annual salary of $132,775 was due to increase this year by 2 percent — an extra $2,655 — if he had taken the raise.

The mayor froze pay last year for all city workers not already covered by union-negotiated pay increases. He said Thursday that he couldn’t freeze worker pay and then give himself a raise.

Some members of the Cleveland City Council also have said they are giving up their scheduled pay increases.
