Oakland show to benefit Youngstown filmmaker
YOUNGSTOWN — The short documentary films of Youngstown native Derrick A. Jones will be screened at 6 p.m. April 11 at the Oakland Center for the Arts, 220 W. Boardman St., as part of a benefit show for Jones, a documentary filmmaker and Ohio University film student.
Jones has been awarded an unpaid internship with the Cannes Film Festival in France, and the benefit will help him raise money to cover his expenses.
Jones’ films have been featured at the San Diego Black Film Festival, the Texas Black Film Festival, and the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival. He was the recipient of The Princess Grace Foundation Award in 2008.
Also scheduled for the benefit show are performances by the Zou, We Good, We St8, Nikita Jones, Eos, WiZdom and more. An account has also been set up through Huntington Bank for donations.

BHS jazz ensembles, Teddy Pantelas to play
BOARDMAN — The 9th annual Boardman High School Jazz Fest is at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Boardman Performing Arts Center, 7777 Glenwood Ave.
The three BHS jazz ensembles will perform, along with guest artist Teddy Pantelas.
Tickets are available at the door at $3 for adults and $2 for students (free for senior citizens and children).
‘Mongol’ at film series
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The Jake Erhardt International Film Series will show the Russian film “Mongol” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sebastian Mueller Theater in the McKelvey Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public.
A short introduction will be given prior to the showing, and a discussion will follow.
The 2007 film, directed by Sergei Bodrov, was nominated for a 2008 Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film. It tells the story of young Genghis Khan and how early life experiences led him to become a legendary conqueror. This is the final film in the series for this academic year.
Birthday bash with band
YOUNGSTOWN — A birthday party for all Aries and Taurus people will be held April 17 at Buckeye Elks, 421 North Ave., featuring Youngstown’s Total Package Band. Tickets are $10 in advance ($12 at the door) and are available at the Buckeye Elks, Goldies’s Flowers, C. Staples Barbecue or by calling Greg Johnson at (330) 720-2495. Everyone is invited to celebrate their birthday at the hall by bringing your own cake, food and drinks to this BYOB affair. The event starts at 9 p.m.
