death row Facing execution
Some of the data in the 2008 edition of the Ohio Attorney General’s Capital Crimes Report, required by law to be released each April:
Ohio has 165 men and one woman on death row who are facing execution. That’s down from 183 men and one woman a year ago. Those figures are lower than those reported by Department of Rehabilitation and Correction officials, whose figures can include inmates who have received execution delays but could still have their death sentence reinstated.
The state has 21 men close to execution, meaning their appeals are all but finished, the highest figure this decade.
Of death row inmates, 91 (51 percent) were black, 77 (45 percent) were white and 8 (4 percent) were listed as another race.
The average age of a death row inmate was 45 years and the average time on death row was 13.6 years.
Of the 28 inmates executed since 1999, including two last year, their average age was 45 and the average length of time from death sentence to execution was 14.3 years. Of executed inmates, 64 percent were white and 36 percent were black.
