STRUTHERS — Pat O’Brien tossed a no-hitter while Nick Dinello homered and singled for the Spartans (1-0) at Cene Park. O’Brien struck out eight batters and walked one while Kevin McCulloh also had two hits. The Irish (0-1) scored their run in the seventh inning on two errors, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
Poland 13, Struthers 1
POLAND — Zack Custer went 3-for-3 for Poland, which rolled up 12 hits. Nick Elliott added a homer, a single and four RBIs, Matt Pitzulo had two hits and two RBIs while Ross Lopez had two hits. For Struthers, Dom Lariccia had a single and an RBI.
Canfield 9, Hubbard 2
CANFIELD — Winning pitcher Jared Turocy hit a three-run homer to lead the Cardinals (1-0). Turocy and Brett Cooper each had two hits while Jake Kucek and Kyle Vaclav each had two RBIs. Cooper and Tom Cheslik doubled. Turocy whiffed four and walked two in the five innings he pitched. For the Eagles (0-1), Todd Gasior, Tim Schiraldi and Dan Helsel doubled.
Howland 10, Salem 0
SALEM — Matt Preston had three hits while Jared Kirin, Adam Shrodek and Andy Zigmont had two apiece as the Tigers drilled 12 hits. Zigmont held the Quakers to three hits: two by Randy Wyand and one by Brandon Simmons.
Southeast 8, Newton Falls 7
NEWTON FALLS — Eric Fleming had two doubles while David White added a double and a single for Southeast. The Pirates scored the winning run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk.
Mathews 10, Brookfield 0
VIENNA — Rick Sommers, a junior righthanded pitcher, pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts over a five-inning span for Mathews. Greg Wise had a triple, single and one RBI. Chris Morgan had two RBIs and John Homan had two singles to lead the Mustangs.
Springfield 12, South Range 0
NEW MIDDLETOWN — Todd Kibby (four innings) and Joe Fiedorczyk teamed up for the five-inning one-hitter. Kibby struck out 10 and walked three for the Tigers (1-0, 1-0 Inter tri-County League Tier One). Travis Richey’s two hits included a double and drove in four runs. He also scored twice. Fiedorczyk had two hits and scored twice. For the Raiders (0-1, 0-1) Greg Rohan’s fifth-inning single broke up Kibby’s no-hitter.
Columbiana 4, Crestview 1
COLUMBIANA — Josh Saverko threw a two-hitter, walked just one, struck out six and went the route in the season opener for both teams. Travis Denneade had a single and a double for the Clippers. Corey Hill homered for the Rebels.
Mineral Ridge 7, Lisbon 7 (suspended)
LISBON — The game will resume in the sixth inning today after darkness halted the game. Junior catcher Tom Padovani’s two-run homer was the big hit for the Rams, which had a 7-1 lead until giving up six runs in the fifth. Lisbon trailed, 7-3, in the fifth when, with two outs, a dropped pop-up opened the door for four more runs.
McDonald 8, Wellsville 1
McDONALD — Mike Gatta (six innings) and Anthony Raschilla teamed up to toss a one-hitter. Gatta struck out one and walked three. Raschilla homered and doubled to drive in two runs for the Blue Devils (1-0, 1-0 ITCL2). Alex Baker had two hits and a RBI while Devin Bansberg drove in two runs.
Lowellville 12, Jackson-Milton 1
STRUTHERS — Andrew Mincher pitched a seven-hitter while Drew Skelley and Louis Lebron each had two singles and a pair of RBIs to lead Lowellville to the abbreviated five-inning win in the ITCL2 game at Cene Park. Jeff Karash had a double and two singles while Jim Nagy had two singles for Jackson-Milton.
