Lundholm is featured

BOSTON, MA — Mahoning Valley Phantoms defenseman Cullen Lundholm is the subject of an in-depth player profile in this month’s issue of the New England Hockey Journal.

The newspaper, which focuses on teams in the New England region and players who are natives of the region, is the primary hockey news source for the entire northeast.

The focus of the article, written by junior hockey columnist Bill Keefe, is the mileage that Lundholm has logged playing for different teams over the past few years.

Pirates fire pair

PITTSBURGH — Pitching coach Jeff Andrews and first base coach Lou Frazier were fired Monday by the Pittsburgh Pirates after spending only one season in their jobs.

Andrews, a former Pirates minor league pitching coach whose hiring was recommended by several of the club’s pitchers, had season-long problems with one of the worst staffs in the franchise’s history.

The last-place Pirates didn’t have a 10-game winner for the first time in 108 seasons, or since the franchise’s fourth season, and their 5.08 ERA was the fifth-highest in club history. The starting staff won only 33 games on a team that went 67-95.

Cassell had been in touch with Doc Rivers during the summer, but the Celtics coach didn’t know if Cassell had decided to come back for another season with the team. The 38-year-old Cassell, who joined the team in March for the playoff run, showed up for media day Monday to sign a contract for his 16th NBA season.

Armstrong wants to race in Australia

AUSTIN, Texas — Lance Armstrong is hoping his comeback will indeed start in Australia.

The seven-time Tour de France winner wants to return to elite racing in next January’s Tour Down Under even though he’s not eligible to return until Feb. 1, 2009. The race in Australia runs Jan. 20-25.

Armstrong said Monday he’s hoping authorities will grant him an exemption and allow him to ride.

“It’s my hope that I get down there,” Armstrong said by phone from Marfa, Texas.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) requires riders coming out of retirement to be in the sport’s anti-doping program for six months before racing.

Soccer mischief

WARSAW, Poland — Polish soccer fans punched and kicked each other during a game, leading to 27 arrests.

The outburst happened in the western city of Szczecin at a first-division game over the weekend.

Footage broadcast on state television showed Wisla Plock fans scaling a fence to get into a section reserved for fans of the home team, Flota Swinoujscie. Fans from both teams attacked each other wildly before police arrived to restore order.

Officials have struggled for years to quell hooliganism at Polish soccer stadiums.
