Canfield, Howland boys, girls advance to district golf events

Both Canfield and Howland boys and girls golf teams advanced Monday in Division I sectional play.

In the boys sectional at Candywood Golf Club in Vienna the Tigers finished third and the Cardinals were fourth to advance the Div. I district tournament at Pine Hills Golf Club in Hinckley Oct. 8.

Hudson won the team title with 310 strokes, while Walsh Jesuit was second with 312. Howland finished third at 313 and Canfield fourth with 315.

Austin Elder, a Howland senior, was the tournament medalist as he led the Tigers with an even-par 72, while junior Matt Haering shot 79. Canfield was led by senior Mark Schimmel’s 77 and senior Nick Hardy’s 79.

Two other area players were also among the four individuals who advanced to district play. Poland’s Paukl Sujka and Boardman’s Brad Koch, both seniors, shot 76s to advance.

In the girls tournament at Tamer Win Golf Course in Cortland Canfield easily won the team title with a 349 total. Howland finished fourth with a 376. Kenston was second at 353 and South Willoughby third at 357. The top four teams advanced to the district tournament Oct. 7 at The Legends of Massillon.

Whitney Graff led the way for the Cardinals with an 83, while Kelsey Ozanich shot 80 to pace the Tigers. Kenston’s Nicki Henry was medalist with a 79. Boardman’s Devin Ferrell also advanced as an individual not on a qualifying team with an 88.

Geneva’s Carlin Kern made a hole-in-one on No. 13, an 88-yard par-3.
