Mosley to fight again

CARSON, Calif. — Shane Mosley would love to get another shot at a world title. If that’s not in the cards, the former four-time champion says he’ll take what he can get.

“At this point, I just want to fight the big fights,” Mosley said after stopping Ricardo Mayorga with one second remaining in their junior middleweight bout Saturday night at Home Depot Center. “The title is cool, I like the title. (Antonio) Margarito has the title, other guys have titles. I want to fight the big fights.”

Mosley, a former four-time world champion, has lobbied in the past for a shot at Margarito, who watched from a ringside seat Saturday night. Margarito stopped Miguel Cotto on July 26 in Las Vegas to win the WBA welterweight championship.

Hammon leads Stars

SAN ANTONIO — Becky Hammon scored 35 points, making four frees throws in the final 36 seconds, and the San Antonio Silver Stars advanced to their first WNBA finals with a 76-72 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Sunday.

The Sparks led 72-67 when Temeka Johnson made two free throws with 1:57 left in the game, but Hammon tied it on a 3-pointer with 1:03 left.

Hammon was 10-of-18 from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and made all nine foul shots.

Shock beat Liberty

YPSILANTI, Mich. — The Detroit Shock are still alive in the WNBA playoffs, thanks in part to a very strange vegetable salad.

Detroit star Plenette Pierson surprised her coach and her teammates by returning to the floor just seven days dislocating her shoulder, and her 10 points helped the Shock stave off elimination with a 64-55 victory Sunday over the New York Liberty in Game 2.

Pierson said she was helped by an unorthodox treatment session suggested by Detroit Pistons trainer Arnie Kander. The Shock trainer applied a poultice to Pierson’s shoulder that included dehydrated turnips and cucumbers.

Tour Championship

ATLANTA — Too far behind to do anything about the FedEx Cup, Camilo Villegas put together a stirring rally Sunday that was good enough to win a playoff over Sergio Garcia for his second straight victory.

Villegas overcame a five-shot deficit by making six birdies over his last 11 holes for a 4-under 66, then beat Garcia with a par in the playoff on the 233-yard 18th.

The 26-year-old Colombian, who had gone 85 starts on the PGA Tour without winning, picked up his second in a row on a sunny afternoon at East Lake.

Navistar LPGA Classic

PRATTVILLE, Ala. — Lorena Ochoa won the Navistar LPGA Classic on Sunday for her seventh victory of the year and first since May, beating Candie Kung with a 2-foot par putt on the second hole of a playoff.

Recharged after a month away from the tour, the top-ranked Mexican star closed with a 2-under 70 to match Kung (67) and Cristie Kerr (66) at 15-under 273. Kerr was eliminated with a bogey on the first extra hole.

SAS Championship

CARY, N.C. — Argentina’s Eduardo Romero won the SAS Championship for his third Champions Tour victory in five starts, closing with a 6-under 66 for a three-stroke victory over Tom Kite.
