roundup News and notes

A part of history: Youngstown State’s last-play loss to Liberty Saturday was part of Football Championship Subdivision history. For the first time in FCS history (since it began as I-AA in 1978), three FCS games were decided in regulation on a game’s final play on the same date. All three games Saturday involved teams from the Missouri Valley Football Conference. South Dakota State used the largest comeback win in coach John Stiegelmeier’s tenure and the largest in the 24-year history of the MVFC to stun Stephen F. Austin, 50-48. The Jackrabbits trailed 38-6 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter before staging their historic rally. The previous largest deficit overcome by any MVFC team was a 23-point deficit, when Western Illinois rallied to beat Missouri State, 35-31, in 1988. Southern Illinois’ 27-24 win against UNI marked only the seventh league game decided in the regular on the game’s final play and first since Oct. 16, 2004, when UNI edged Youngstown State, 22-20, on Brian Wingert’s 31-yard field goal.

Players of the week: South Dakota State running back Kyle Minett of South Dakota State, and Southern Illinois linebacker Brandin Jordan and kicker Kyle Dougherty were named MVFC players of the week.
