Prep golf tourneys continue; league cross country meets set

The Division I sectional golf tournaments will be conducted today at sites in Trumbull County.

The boys event will be hosted by Candywood Country Club in Vienna, with Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Howland, Niles, Poland and Warren Harding among the 15 teams taking part.

The girls tournament will be held at Tamer Win Golf Course in Cortland. Fitch, Boardman, Canfield, Howland, Niles and Warren Harding are the local teams among 15 in the field.

In both events the top four teams and four individuals will advance to the district tournaments — the boys at Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley, and the girls at Legends of Massillon Golf Course.

Sectional champion Ursuline, along with Cardinal Mooney, Salem and Lakeview, will compete in the boys Division II district golf tournament Wednesday at Windmill Lakes Golf Course in Ravenna.

Thomas Lydic of Champion, Josh Dunch of Hubbard, Jason Ramus of United and Adam Peace of Newton Falls, who qualified from the sectional tournament as individuals, will also compete in the district, which is slated to begin at 9 a.m.

The girls Div. II district golf tournament will be held at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course in Canton Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. Sectional champion Poland will be joined by the teams from Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline and Hubbard and individual qualifiers Ariel Witmer of South Range, Stephanie Baker of Leetonia and Emily Fuller of Warren JFK.

The Div. III boys district tournament will be conducted at Seven Hills Country Club Thursday in Hartville at 8:30 a.m.

Lowellville, East Palestine and Springfield qualified as teams, while Bruce Timko of Warren JFK, Travis Denmeade of Columbiana and Brad Gilanyi of Southington advanced as individuals.

The state tournaments will be Oct. 10-11 in Columbus. The Div. II boys at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course, boys Div. III at Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne (south of Columbus) and the Div. II girls at OSU’s Gray Course.

The first All American Conference cross country championships will be held at Memorial Park in Salem Tuesday with the boys varsity race set for 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls varsity run and then middle school races.

The Inter Tri-County League championships will also be run Tuesday. The Tier Two races will be held at McDonald and the Tier One races at Western Reserve, both at 4:30 p.m.
