COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP Saturday’s late games

Florida International 35, Toledo 16

TOLEDO — Julian Reams rushed for three touchdowns to lead Florida International over Toledo. Reams’ first TD put the Golden Panthers (1-3) in front 14-13 in the second quarter. T.Y. Hilton returned the second half kickoff 55 yards, and on the next play, Reams ran 27 yards for his second score to put Florida International ahead to stay, 21-16. Reams finished with 75 yards on 19 carries. Hilton caught a 37-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Toledo (1-3) jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led 16-14 at the half, but couldn’t score after the break. They outgained Florida International in total offense, 302 yards to 239, but gave up four turnovers. Toledo’s Morgan Williams gained 98 yards on 25 attempts, while Nick Moore caught nine passes for 65 yards.

No. 13 South Florida 41, N.C. State 10

RALEIGH, N.C. — Matt Grothe threw for 259 yards and a touchdown, completing his first 11 passes during South Florida’s rout of North Carolina State. Jamar Taylor and Mike Ford added 1-yard touchdown runs, and the Big East’s only nationally ranked team had the look of a legitimate contender even without All-America defensive lineman George Selvie, who was in uniform but sat out with an ankle injury. The Bulls (5-0) didn’t need him. They scored touchdowns on their first three possessions, recorded two safeties, built a 31-10 halftime lead and had 354 of their 514 total yards in the first half against a Wolfpack team seeking its second straight upset of a top-15 team.

No. 17 Utah 37, Weber St. 21

SALT LAKE CITY — Louie Sakoda kicked three field goals and four extra points to become the leading scorer in Utah history. Bryan Johnson passed for two touchdowns and Matt Asiata ran for two scores for the Utes (5-0), who avoided any hiccups against their Championship Subdivision neighbors and remained unbeaten for Thursday night’s home game against Oregon State, which upset top-ranked Southern California. Johnson passed for 194 yards and two touchdowns in the first three quarters, then rested through the fourth as Utah’s reserves finished off the Wildcats (3-2). Weber State added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including one with 11 seconds left to make the score a little closer. It was homecoming for both the Utes and Weber State coach Ron McBride, who coached Utah from 1990-2002. Utah showed short video honoring McBride before the game and McBride waved to the applauding fans from the sideline opposite of where he spent so long building Utah into contender.

South Carolina 26, UAB 13

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Stephen Garcia was 13-for-20 for 131 yards and ran for 86 more, giving South Carolina’s offense enough of a kick to beat UAB. Garcia came in on the second possession for South Carolina (3-2). Over the next five first half possessions, the redshirt freshman accounted for all but six of the Gamecocks’ yards and either passed the ball or ran it on 26 of the next 32 plays. South Carolina’s defense took care of the rest, holding the Blazers (1-4) to 207 yards and forced three turnovers as the Gamecocks won back-to-back games for the first time since starting 6-1 last season. UAB quarterback Joe Webb was 17 of 26 for 140 yards and led his team with 22 yards on the ground.
