Heacock is good coach and human being

Fanfare:

I am writing this in response to the letter about the Heacock brothers that was in the Sept. 21 sports section. John Mirto of Hubbard was challenging Ron Strollo and Jim Tressel to get rid of Jon and Jim Heacock.

I will not attempt to refute anything Mr. Mirto says about Jim Heacock. I follow Ohio State, but not closely enough to comment on the coaching abilities of Jim Heacock.

I do, however, wish to address Mr. Mirto regarding Jon Heacock. Jon Heacock is a fine man, he loves God, his family and his extended football family. You don’t have to be around him for very long to see this in him.

As far as his coaching of our beloved Penguins of Youngstown State University, how can you ask for more? No one can coach a team to win every game of every season, that’s just ridiculous to think about.

Instead, look at his record, it stands for itself! He has led the Penguins to two Gateway championship titles. Under Heacock, the Penguins have been 7-4 in 2007, 11-3 in 2006 and 8-3 in 2005.

Anyone in attendance at the Ice Castle this past Saturday night saw a fantastic football game. The Penguin players and coaches were brilliant. Many naysayers probably thought there was no way the Penguins could win that game against North Dakota State. If you were there, it seemed as if there was no way the Penguins could lose!

I challenge not only Mr. Mirto, but those of you who might have washed your hands of the Penguins, come to a game. We have a team that plays their hearts out to prove they are worthy of wearing the Penguin uniform.

We have a talented and dedicated football coaching staff that works hard to put the team together. Youngstown has enough bad publicity, let’s not point fingers at each other, but rather band together behind our Penguins. Go YSU!!
