YOUNGSTOWN — Thursday is the deadline to purchase tickets for Meridian Services’ 2008 Valley Impact Awards event on Oct. 7 at Avion on the Water in Canfield.

The keynote speaker is former Ohio State University quarterback Art Schlichter, who will share his story of recovery from a decades-long gambling addiction, as well as stories from his OSU playing days under coach Woody Hayes.

Award recipients are: Excellence in Leadership, Judge John Durkin, founder and presiding judge of the Mahoning Country Drug Court; Collaboration in Action, Sam Boak of Boak and Sons and Meridian WorkLife; Excellence in Service, Jerry Burnett of Meridian; and Behind the Faces of Recovery, Peggy Henning, who assisted her daughter in her battle with substance abuse.

Hospice volunteer training offered

NEW CASTLE, Pa — Jameson Hospice of Lawrence County is offering hospice volunteer training sessions at the Jameson Hospice office, Jameson South Campus, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The first class is Oct. 6, but flexible scheduling of classes is available after that date.
