Pennington releases ‘Good Design’ book

Ty Pennington titled his new book “Good Design Can Change Your Life.” And he should know.

For five years, Pennington has been host of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” the ABC series in which deserving families are given new or renovated homes. He draws ideas from those makeovers for his book, which is intended to inspire everyday folks to make decor changes that make their own lives a little better.

The book focuses on “Ty’s Secret Rooms,” the rooms Pennington designs for the families featured on the show.

“Good Design Can Change Your Life” is scheduled for release this month from Simon & Schuster. It’s priced at $25 in paperback.

Design tips can help with decorating walls

Oh stop! Decorating walls isn’t that complicated or expensive. Check out these design tips from art.com and you’ll see.

UFocus on one area: A common mistake is to decorate walls by sprinkling things around to fill up empty space. Instead, draw an imaginary rectangle on the main focal wall in the room you’re decorating. Fill that rectangle with a grouping of themed art to make more of an impact at less of a price.

UChoose oversized pieces: By hanging one magnificent, oversized print on a wall, you can make your budget — and room — seem larger.

UPurchase already framed pieces: The additional costs incurred with framing an inexpensive print can be significant.

UTry photo transfers: Instead of buying a new print, take your favorite photo and have it transferred to canvas for a unique and personalized piece of wall decor.
