PENGUIN NOTES YSU vs. Liberty
The record: Brandon Summers completed 32 of 39 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns Saturday against Liberty. The 32 completions set a new YSU record, breaking the old mark of 31 set back in 1987 by Trenton Lykes against Eastern Michigan. His 334 passing yards is the fourth-best total in school history and the first 300-yard passing performance since Tom Zetts threw for 314 yards in a 2006 playoff win over James Madison.
Attendance: The crowd of 18,978 was the 10th largest in the history of Stambaugh Stadium. It was the largest crowd since the Penguins drew 19,617 for a game last year against Missouri State.
Unusual: The Penguins forced three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble recovery, and gave up just one interception, but still lost the game to the Flames.
Streak continues: The Flames (4-0) have won nine straight games and have the longest active winning streak in the Football Championship Subdivision after Dayton had its 11-game streak snapped Saturday by Duquesne.
Injuries continue: The Penguins were banged up pretty good against the Flames. There were no fewer than six Penguins who had to be attended to on the field. Several were just cramps, but sophomore fullback Kyle Banna of Canfield had to be carried off the field, while both junior tailback Jabari Scott and linebacker Na’eem Outler needed assistance getting off the field.
Defensive stats: Sophomore free safety Andre Elliott continued to lead the Penguins defensively. The team leader in tackles for the year had 11 more Saturday to share top honors with senior Mike Barlak and sophomore Jordan Edwards. Elliott also had a forced fumble, while Barlak came up with an interception. Junior cornerback Lenny Wicks also had an interception, while junior Crispin Fernandez, Josh Myers and Stephen Meadows all came up with tackles for losses.
Up next: After three straight road games, the Penguins will go back on the road next Saturday when they trek out to Cedar City, Utah to meet Southern Utah in their final non-conference matchup of the season. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Eccles Coliseum.
