HALL OF FAME \ Struthers High School The 2008 Struthers High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class was honored at a banquet on Sept. 20 at the Embassy. The 2008 class consists of:
Patty Fitzpatrick Balint — A graduate in 1978, she led the girls basketball team to the state championship.
George Lancaster — A 1964 graduate who was a standout on the football field before going on to play at Michigan.
Jim Lanzo — A 1990 graduate, he was honored for football and track and field. He went on to play at Marshall.
Dan Lewis — A 1983 graduate, he was honored for football. During his career, the Wildcats won three Mahoning Valley Conference championships and two of the teams were undefeated. In addition to football, he lettered in baseball and track.
Mike Majzun — A 1998 graduate, he was honored for basketball. A member of the 1998 Metro Athletic Conference championship team, he later played at Bethany where he ended his career as the sixth-leading scorer in school history.
Mark McCann — A linebacker on the 1964-65 teams, he later played at University of Louisville, then returned to Struthers and coached the Wildcats to the 1980 MVC championship. He has also coached championship teams in Pennsylvania and Florida.
Larry Miner — He was honored for golf. During his high school days, he won many junior tournaments including the Mid American Junior open.
Jim Musolino — A 1986 graduate who was the Northeast Ohio defensive lineman of the year and second team all-state selection in football his senior year. He still holds the season sack record with 19.
Sam Muto — A 1992 graduate, he was honored for football. He capped his career as a first-team all-state selection and played in the Big 33 game. Sam attended Findlay where he was a two-year starter and a member of two NAIA national championship teams.
Tracy Pearson — He was the state long jump champion and still holds both the high jump and long jump school records. He also excelled in basketball and went on to Norfolk State where he participated in both sports.
Pete Pirone Jr. — He graduated in 1992 and is being honored for football. In his senior year, he was named first team All-MVC and first team All-NEO. He went on to start two years at Clarion and was named a conference scholar-athlete twice.
John Pokopatz — A 1997 graduate, he was honored for basketball. In his senior year, he was All-NEO and District 1 player of the year. He also participated in the North-South All-Star game. He finished his career ranked in the top 10 in six categories.
Maria Saltsman — A 1995 graduate, she was honored for golf. In her junior year, she qualified for the regional, and in her senior year averaged 41.5. She also won many junior tournaments.
Rosanne Scott — A 1996 graduate, she was honored for basketball. She was named district player of the year and all-state her senior year. She was a four-year starter and led her team to two district championships. She went on to attend Bethany where she was all-conference four times and twice conference player of the year. She is women’s coach at Westminster.
Pete Vargin — A 1940 graduate of Struthers High School, he was honored for football. Known for his speed, offense, defense and special teams, Vargin participated in track and at one time was a member of the record-setting 440-relay team. He is still an avid Wildcats fan and attends many games.
