NORTH JACKSON — “Investing in Education, Our Communities and Our Most Important Resources — Our Children” is the theme of drug prevention and educational program planned from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at Ellsworth Presbyterian Church, 11171 Akron-Canfield Road. The session is for adults.

Speakers will be: Judge Jack Durkin, Mahoning County Common Pleas Court; Deputy Greg Taillon, Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department and school resource officer at Jackson Milton and Western Reserve Local schools; Scott Weamer, Canfield Police Department, school resource officer at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center; Pat Sciaretta, outreach specialist with Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic; the Rev. Bonnie Dutton of Ellsworth Presbyterian; the Rev. Russell Libb of Berlin Center United Methodist Church; and Richard Blevins, Ohio Valley Teen Challenge board member.

Career training course

YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army with the help of Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) will have a career training course at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Salvation Army, 1501 Glenwood Ave.

The course will last an hour and is free and open to the public. Those who attend will learn the necessary preparations when applying and interviewing for jobs.

Writing a r sum , proper interview attire, completing job applications and searching for jobs are some of the highlighted topics offered by the course.

On Oct. 7, the career training course continues with an extended session from 9 a.m. to noon. The extended course includes a workshop on the basics of beginning a small business.

Candidate facing hearing

SALEM — Gregory Shaffer, who is running for Columbiana County commissioner, faces a hearing next month in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court on his delinquent taxes.

Shaffer said Friday he has already repaid most of the taxes that he said he owed after falling behind when his business slumped.

He runs a toner cartridge refill and remanufacturing company in Salem.

The Ohio Department of Taxation filed judgments against him for $519 in 2004, $127 in 2006, and $350 earlier this year.

He is running against Penny Traina of Wellsville, the Democrat incumbent, and Becky Burke of East Liverpool, a Republican.

Scrap tire drop-off

HOWLAND — The township will conduct a scrap tire drop-off for Howland Township residents only Oct. 6-10.

Residents may drop off a maximum of eight passenger tires with no rims at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road, between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. on those dates. For information, call (330) 856-4037.

Zoning request hearing

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — City council has scheduled a public hearing for 6:15 p.m. Oct. 7 to hear comments about the conditional-use request made by the U.S. Postal Service for a carrier distribution center at 20 E. South St. The area is zoned commercial.

The hearing will be in council chambers at the City Building, 230 N. Jefferson St.

Shots hit cars, house

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are trying to determine who is responsible for firing shots at a South Side home this weekend.

Officers sent to a home in the 500 block of W. Princeton Avenue at about 1:41 a.m. Saturday found a Lincoln Navigator and a Buick in the driveway with bullet holes in their windows. They also found four bullet holes in the house.
